Since 1940, Wisconsin has issued a specific subclass of plates issued to heavy trucks. Most of these plates use large metal inserts or stickers, hence the nickname "insert" plates.

Heavy truck plates, also known as "insert truck" plates, were first issued in 1940, set to expire between September 1940 and June 1941. Plates could be revalidated either quarterly or yearly, and large metal tabs were used for validation, with a number and one or two letters indicating various information about the carrier, quarter of expiration, fees, etc. Information on the tabs is shown here. Heavy truck plates were issued to all trucks over 8,000lbs, though they were also issued to light trucks for hire 8,000lbs. and under.
Additionally, a base of truck plates dated "3-31-40" is known to exist for vehicles over 10,000lbs.; as far as I'm concerned, these are likely quarterly truck plates issued before the known "insert" truck plates with the large metal inserts. I theorize a "6-30-40" and possibly even a "12-31-39" base may exist given the law for these plates was enacted in October 1939, though neither of these bases have been seen yet. So far only one "3-31-40" base truck plate is known, along with a similar dated trailer plate and a couple bus plates also dated 3-31-40 in a slightly different color scheme.

Sometime between 1940 and 1947, weight classes up to X were added. 45 46 base plates were issued a vertical "47" tab like light trucks and were validated with different colored tabs using "C" or "P," and as such there is no "46 47" base.
The E and F weight classes each exhausted their 4 number formats and went into an A 12345 overflow format, using a small font to accommodate the extra digit.

In 1947, the format of heavy truck plates and their tabs changed. While the basic layout of the plates was the same, the plates were large and oval shaped, and the tabs switched the format of letter and number codes, going from P 4 to 4 P for 4th quarter private carrier tabs, for example.
A 47 48 base plate with the letter as a prefix as opposed to a suffix like all other plates has been found, and the significance of this letter transposition is unknown.

In 1950, the format of heavy truck plates changed majorly. The tabs also changed from a horizontal tab format to a vertical tab format, and were placed at the far right side of the plate as opposed to the top center of older plates.
In 1953, the E weight class exhausted E9999 and overflowed to E10000 and used the thinner 1950-1952 font to accommodate the extra digit. Later 1956 plates used a 6"x12" base as the nationwide plate size standard was being adopted. It is unknown what format of tabs these plates were issued.

In 1957, heavy truck plates used a smaller plate size as the standard plate size was being adopted nationwide. The most notable change, however, is the tabs changed from a vertical rectangular format to an odd tab format that wasn't any one shape. The font for the tabs also was narrowed significantly. Lastly, the weight classes XA-XF were added sometime around 1959.
The 1962 base used 6 tabs instead of the usual 4, because the base was extended to December 1962 as the issuance cycle for heavy truck plates was transitioning from a July-June cycle to a January-December cycle.

In 1967, heavy truck plates 10,000lbs. and below split off into a new type called "light truck for hire." While E weight class truck plates were officially categorized as insert truck plates, they followed the issuance cycles and colors of light truck for hire plates so they're shown in there.
Monthly stickers used a single letter or number code to identify the month, with 1-9 being used for January through September respectively, and O, N, and D being used for October, November, and December respectively. Year codes were added to the stickers in 1968.

In 1978, the weight classes changed to better reflect the vehicles on the roads, and a new square sticker format was used. Letter codes were eliminated on stickers in 1980, leaving only a number between 1 and 4 indicating the quarter number, a two-digit year identifier, and the DOT logo.
The new weight classes ranged from D (10,000lbs.) to T (80,000lbs.), and used a stacked letter format with the top letter being the weight code and the bottom letter being a serial letter that incremented when a series exhausted its normal format. For example, once GA9999 was reached, GB 1 would be issued.
In addition to the normal font differences used on the numbers, there are also two different fonts used for stacked letters, particularly the letters A and G which one font is thinner than the other. The new short letter font was introduced late into the 1986 series, being issued around June-December 1987.

In 1994, a unique light teal colored base was issued, which was used from 1994 to 2008. There are three major variations, the first using a wide font for the numbers, one using a narrow font for the numbers and stacked weight codes, and one using the same narrow font for the numbers but a much wider font for the stacked letter codes.
Unlike previous bases that restarted the numbering configuration when they were reissued, the 1994 series picked up roughly where the 1992 series left off; whatever bottom letter was last used on the 1992 base was incremented by one on the 1994 base. For example, the D weight class went from DA to DC in the 1992 series, so the 1994 series started at DD.

In late 2008, the current series of heavy truck plates was issued. The 2009 series started where the 1994 series left off to a much closer precision than the 1994 series; the 1994 series went to about XC75000 and the 2009 series started at XC80001, for example.
Within the 2009 series, there has been some very peculiar numbering systems for the D weight class. They went from DG55001 to DG99999, then around 2017 they wrapped back to DG 1001 and went to DG 1301 before skipping to DH10001.

Light truck for hire plates were technically first issued when heavy truck plates were in 1940, however due to them being identical to heavy truck plates they are shown in that category.
Light truck for hire plates split off from heavy truck plates in 1967, and encompassed light trucks for hire 8,000lbs. and under. E weight class heavy trucks were issued similar plates, so they are shown here as well. However, light truck for hire plates were only revalidated on an annual basis, while E weight class truck plates were revalidated for any quarter of the year.
E weight class truck plates overflowed the E1234 format several times, and once E9999 was exhausted a double letter "EE" series was issued.

In 1978, the weight classes shifted along with all other plates in the state of Wisconsin. Initially plates used the same colors as light truck plates, however from 1982 to 1990, light truck for hire plates used unique color schemes, and from 1992 to 2004 they used reflective bases of heavy truck plates.
There's an odd 1990 base light truck for hire plate known, which is a type of black on bluish-gray. It's unknown what this plate is, and moreover it's in mint, unissued condition.

Disabled veteran light truck for hire is yet another subtype of disabled veteran subtype known for Wisconsin. Very few of these plates were issued, and like disabled light truck for hire plates, it's not exactly known when these were first issued or discontinued, though they were most likely issued from 1984 to 1998, like other disabled subtypes.

Heavy farm truck plates have been issued since at least 1950, dated 1951. They used farm truck bases from 1951 to 1965, and heavy truck bases from 1967 onward.
Plates started at x 5001 from 1958-1973, with x being the weight class. 1974 plates started at x10-001, and later on in the series the format changed from x10-001 to x 10001. Heavy farm truck plates were issued to farm trucks over 10,000lbs. and the weight classes went up to "S" which encompassed anything above 28,000lbs.

In 1978, the weight classes changed along with all other plates in Wisconsin. From 1978 onward heavy farm truck plates were issued to farm trucks over 12,000lbs. The N weight class was the highest weight class mentioned in DMV plate guides through at least 1985, however weight classes up to "Q" have been confirmed as early as 1984, and weight classes up to "T" have been confirmed as early as 1987. For 1992, heavy farm truck plates received regular passenger stickers as opposed to farm truck stickers.

Like heavy truck plates, the M weight class was added in 1992. Plates from this point onward used a bottom letter code of "F", presumably to avoid confusion with regular insert truck plates. 1994/1995 plates started at xF30001, with x being the weight class.
For the 1995 base, several variations of a sticker area date have been noted. Some plates used a debossed "95," some used a debossed "94," and others still used no date at all.
